After scoring a late penalty to propel her side to the round-robin stage of the 2021 NWFL Nationwide League with a 1-0 win over Lakeside, FC Phoenix Queens captain, Olaobi Mariam says the game was not an easy one as she had to deliver the goods for her team.
“I feel excited scoring the winning goal for my team and give God the glory. It was not an easy task as the pressure was much from the coaches and players. As the captain of the team, they are looking up to me and I just have to deliver. I thank God that through me, we emerged with the victory.” She told www.kick442.com.
The game was heading towards a penalty shoot-out before the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty after an infringement from Lakeside Queens defender.
“I don’t want the game to end in a penalty shoot out because it’s anybody’s game. We thank God that we didn’t even get to the penalty shoot out and I was able to convert the penalty when it was awarded leading by example.” Says Olaobi Mariam during her post-match reaction.
FC Phoenix Queens will square up with Omidiran Babes in the first game of the round-robin stage.
Mariam is confident that her side can perform well and make it to the NWFL Championship.
She said: “The most important game is today. For the round-robin games, I believe that my players will be able to deliver with the help and assistance of our coaches. We are going to promote to the NWFL Championship as we have played a lot of games and competitions in preparation for the league.”
The next five games will determine the four clubs that will gain promotion to the NWFL Championship from the Ijebu Ode centre, while four clubs will also be promoted from the Abuja centre.
