The confederation of African Football, CAF, has postponed the final of the 2020 CAF champions league and Confederation cup till further notice.
The CAF Confederation cup final was scheduled for the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat Morocco on the May 24th 2020, while the Japoma Stadium in Cameroon’s economic capital, Douala, was chosen to host the Champions league final on May 29, 2020.
According to several sources, CAF officials met on Saturday April 18, 2020, and decided to indefinitely postpone the finals of the twin competitions till further notice, amidst the rapid spread of the Coronavirus in Africa. The decision comes just days after CAF had postponed the semi final of both competitions.
It was the first time that the finals of both competitions was supposed to be played on neutral ground, since CAF decided in June 2019 to have a one_legged final in a neutral venue instead of two-legged finals played on a home and away basis for their two club competitions.
Morocco’s Raja Casablanca and Wydad Athletic club, as well as Egypt’s Zamalek and Al Ahly are the four sides left in the CAF competitions league, while Hassania Agadir and RS Berkane both from Morocco, Horoya from Guinea Conakry and FC Pyramids from Egypt are the four teams in the Confederations Cup last four.
Football activities all over the world have been grounded since the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic in late December 2019, and the postponement of the Confederation cup and champions league, is the latest in the series of CAF competitions that have been postponed, after the African Nations championship that was to take place in Cameroon this April and the African Zone U17 women’s world cup Qualifiers, had suffered similar fate.
