Maritzburg United have raided Cameroon and signed 27-year old Cameroon international goalkeeper Anye Fru Derick from Cameroon giants Cotomsport of Garoua for an undisclosed fee.
The Cameroon international arrived South Africa this Saturday on invitation from officials of the Team of Choice and quickly moved to the club house to finalize terms about the switch.
The had shot stopper who played his last game for Cotonsport last month in the one-nil 16 final cup game against AS Lausanne of Yaounde interrupted his brilliant season to join Maritzburg.
Anye who kept 16 clean sheets in 22 games now continue his career in South Africa as a player under coach John Maduka.
The arrival of Anye takes Maritzburg’s signings to eight in this summer transfer window following the acquisitions of Siboniso Conco, Tshidido Monomodi and Brian Hlongwa last week in addition to Given Mashikinya, Bonginkosi Makume, Bongani Sam and Karim Kimvuidi who had joined earlier this month to bolster the squad ahead of the 2022/ 23 DSTV Premiership Season.
Anye is expected to be one of Maritzburg’s final signing before the start of the season in early August.
A successful goalkeeper and arguably one of the most popular in Cameroon these days, Anye came through Union Sportive of Douala where he made his top-flight debut aged 19 in 2014, he went on to represent the club in the CAF Champions League and guided them to top of the table finishes in three consecutive seasons.
His exploits at Union earned him a move abroad. In 2018, he moved to Al-Shoalah FC who had scouted him from the 2018 African Nations Championship during Cameroon’s final group game against Angola.
Anye honoured his one season contract in Saudi Arabia before returning home to play for Panthere of Nde where he set a record of eight consecutive league games without conceding and earned a move to record champions, Cotonsport of Garoua
In two seasons at Coton Anye won back-to-back top-flight titles – with nearly identical penalty shoot out heroics during the semi-final of the 2021 season playoff game against Fovu of Baham and the 2022 playoff final against Eding sport de La Lekie. He saved a combined five of the ten penalties in the two games.
Anye finished the 2021-2022 season as the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets (14 in 20 games) and didn’t concede in two cup of Cameroon games, making him one of two keepers yet to concede in the competition this season.
In the international scene, Anye was a part of the Intermediate Lions of Cameroon team at CHAN 2016 in Rwanda and CHAN 2018 in Morocco.
The goalkeeper noted for his poweress on one-on-one situation and exceptional reflexes was also part of the Indomitable Lions team pre-selected for AFCON 2017 by Hugo Broos but he failed to make the cut for the tournament which Cameroon won in Gabon.
Before his departure from Cameroon many had been clamouring for his inclusion in the roaster of the senior national selection especially after he saved three penalties and was crowned MTN man of the match in the final of the playoff earlier this month in Garoua.
