30-year-old Nigerian forward Odion Jude Ighalo has revealed that he received a surprise call from Manchester United’s legend Andy Cole on the wake of signing for the Premier League outfit.
Ighalo joint United on transfer deadline day on loan from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua in January 2020.
Ighalo who is a boyhood United fan, joint the club to make up for the injured Marcus Rashford and has gone ahead to impress in his first eight games for the club.
The former Watford forward has scored four goals in his first eight outings for United, leading to speculations that his stay at Old Trafford might go beyond his initial six months loan deal.
The former Julius Berger forward has been an instant hit for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team. He has now revealed that a phone call from Andy Cole is partly responsible for his early giant strides with the 20 times English Champions.
“I have a lot of fun memories of him [Cole] he’s one of the best goal scorers I have ever seen,” Cole told United’s official website.
“He scored a lot of goals for Manchester United. The way he finished was brilliant. I have learnt one or two things from watching old videos.
“It’s a privilege talking with Cole. Even when I signed for United he gave me a surprise call early in the morning to congratulate me even before I started training with the team.
“I cherished that the most. It’s one of those great things, an idol like that from Manchester United before I even started kicking a ball. I appreciated it so much.”
Andrew Alexander Cole, simply known as Andy Cole, now 48, is a Premier League cult hero who scored 93 league goals for Manchester United from 1995 to 2001, in 195 appearances. He also played for Arsenal, Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers, Fulham, Manchester City amongst others, totaling 229 league goals 509 appearances.
