Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua are reported to be open to let their Nigerian forward Odion Ighalo stay with Manchester United till January 2021.
Ighalo joint United in January 2020 on a loan move that expires on May 31st from Shanghai Shenhua.
The Chinese outfit were bent on a return of the 30-year-old Nigerian at the end of his loan spell.
United on their part have been advocating for a loan extension, at least to see out the current campaign which has been suspended since March as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, with the record English Champions aiming to push for a top four spot.
Shanghai Shenhua were only initially open to a loan extension, if an obligation to buy the player at the end it was added to the contract, with the Chinese looking to sell Ighalo for £20million.
Recent reports suggest that the Chinese outfit have a change of position, as they are now open to a loan extension for Ighalo with United, on the condition that he extends his contract with them.
Their change in position can partly be attributed to the fact that border restrictions may prevent Ighalo from returning in time to be ready for the new Chinese Super League season that is scheduled to begin in June.
Ighalo’s current contract with the Chinese club ends in December 2022. Their new offer will see his contract extended till December 2024, with an astronomical salary of £400,000 a week.
Manchester United are still in negotiations with the Chinese outfit.
Ighalo scored 4 goals in 8 games for United since joining them in January and the former Watford forward has convinced many at Old Trafford that he could be a valuable long term addition to the team.
