English Premier League giants Manchester United are waiting for the verdict on when the Premier League will restart to open talks with Ighalo’s current employers Shanghai Shenhua over a potential extension of the Nigerian’s stay at Old Trafford.
Ighalo joint United in January on loan from Shanghai Shenhua and his current loan deal ends at the end of this month.
His four goals in eight games have convinced United’s boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to want to extend his contract with the club.
United are waiting for a clubs’ vote on Monday to decide on what happens with the current campaign, suspended since March like almost every other championship in the world as a result of the global Coronavirus pandemic.
The Chinese Super League is also at the verge of restarting and Shanghai Shenhua will be looking to get their Nigerian forward back and they are reported to be willing to offer him a new contract with an astronomical salary of £400,000 a week.
Ighalo is currently costing United £130,000 a week in wages and the 30-year-old Nigerian has expressed his desire to stay in England.
United will also have to sort out which role Ighalo will play if they succeed to keep him as Marcus Rashford whose back fracture led to Ighalo’s loan deal, is close to a return to full fitness.
United are now sweating on keeping Ighalo especially as Shanghai Shenhua are not ready to let him go, as well as clearly defining his role, with the return of Marcus Rashford.
