The Executive Governor of Bayelsa state, Sen. Douye Diri has called for the support of Private/Multinational Companies in sports in the country, particularly football.
The governor made the call while declaring open the 2022/2023 Nigerian Women Football League (NWFL) Annual General Meeting (AGM)/Congress at the Golden Tulip Hotel Yenagoa Bayelsa State.
Declaring the event open, Governor Douye Diri expressed delight with the level of progress of women’s football in the nation, while urging youths to take advantage of the avenues offered by the game to make something meaningful for their lives.
The governor also used the opportunity to call on Private/Multinational Companies to support sports development in Nigeria which only Government alone cannot do it.
He noted that football outside Nigeria is a private concern but here in Nigeria most of the clubs are state-owned because the bureaucracy of government is not too good for the game, he urged private entities to come in and sponsor male and female football so that football in Nigeria can grow.
While the Chairperson of the Nigeria Women Football League Board, Aisha Falode in her opening remark said the NWFL Congress was an opportunity for key actors to assess the 2021/2022 football season while setting the agenda for the new season, especially in improving standards.
While thanking Governor Diri and the Bayelsa State government for hosting the AGM and Congress, she stated that the goal was to make the women league one of the best in the world.
Meanwhile, in a communiqué issued at the end of the 2022 Annual General Meeting, the congress agreed that the NWFL Premiership 2022/2023 season will kick off on the 14th of September 2022 and it will be played in an abridged format of two groups A and B of seven teams each, with each of the teams drawing at least one bye. The league will be concluded by the Super Six to decide the season’s champions, just as it was done in the previous season.
