The Nigerian Professional Football League started today the 3rd day in the month of November, after so many postponements of its commencement.

Eight matches were played today across different city centres of the country; Owerri, Jos, Umuahia, Nnewi, Kano, Asaba and Bauchi.

Enyimba and Enugu Rangers matches against Nasarrawa and Sunshine respectively were postponed due to their continental engagement.

It was a shocking victory for the Olukoya Boys at Owerri as they defeated the side of their former coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu, Heartland FC 1-0. Clement Ogwu’s header was parried into the net by Heartland’s goalie, Ikechukwu Ezenwa.

Rivers United held on as they played out a goalless draw at a tough place like the Sanni Abacha stadium against Kano Pillars.

The first goal of the season came off the boot of Amadi Samuel of Warri Wolves in the fourth minutes as Warri Wolves and Awka United gave entertaining game that ended 1-1. Awka United equalised in the 28th minutes through Mfon Udoh.

At the Asaba Stadium, DeIta Force came back from a goal down at home to draw one all againt newly promoted side, Akwa Starlet.

Meanwhile, it was all wins for homside Abia Warriors, Plateau United, Wikki Tourist and Ifeanyi Ubah.

Abia Warriors won by two goals to nil against Katsina United at Umuahia. Jimoh Oni scored with a direct freekick from 20 yards another one from him gave the team the victory.

Newly promoted side, Jigiwa Golden Stars couldn’t keep their lead as experienced side Wikki Tourist came from a goal down to win 2-1 at home.

It was a four-goal thriller in the northern derby in the game between Plateau United Lobi Stars as Plateau United defeated Lobi Stars 3-1 in Jos. Silas Nerot gave the Jos side the lead, Solomon Kwambe’s own goal made it two. Skiru Alimi pulled one back for Lobi but Amos Gyang sealed the victory for Plateau United.

FC Ifeanyiubah won 1-0 against Adamawa Utd in a game Ifeanyi Ubah lost a penalty that would have increased their goal tally. Samuel Kalu expertly puts away Chikwelu’s pass to give FCIU the winner just before half-time. Chibuike Ezeh’s spot kick was saved by Adamawa goal keeper after Ezeh was fouled in the box.

A total of fifteen goals were scored, there were three draws and five wins in the eight games played in match day one.
