The match Day one fixtures of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) between Rivers United and Ranger International ended 1-0 in favour of Rivers at Adokiye Amesimaka Stadium on Wednesday.
It was Fortune Omoniwari’s only goal off a Godwin Aguda assist in the 29th minutes that separated the two sides at the end of the day.
The tie which has always been won by the team at home by slim margins didn’t fall short of expectations.
Rivers, being in charge of most of the ball in the first phase of the game scored.
Kehinde Adedipe held the ball brilliantly and found Godwin Aguda at the edge of the box. Aguda turned and sent a dipping cross onto the path of Fortune Omoniwari who guided home the ball to give Rivers the lead.
Rangers tried coming back to the game even as Rivers made effort to double their lead.
A couple of saves by Afelokhai saw Rangers unable to equalise in the second half.
Cletus Emotan of Rivers was sent off in the 72nd minute after his second yellow making the game turn physical.
Coach Salisu brought in Christian Nnaji and Dauda Madaki to replace Chinonso Eziekwe and Kenechukwu Agu to salvage the game, but the boys of Rivers held on to get their first win of the season.
