Chairman of Club Owners’, Isaac Danladi has confirmed news making the rounds that they have voted to cancel the 2019-2020 Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL. He confirmed this during a monitored interview on Channels Television Sports This Morning.

“We had just one recommendation which is the far-reaching decision that was taken yesterday via virtual meeting. The rumours are out and I want to say without any iota of doubt that what you are seeing from the media is true. That was what happened. We have agreed. Out of 20 clubs, 17 has agreed that the league should come to an end for obvious reasons. That is the message that we are taking to the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF via the League Management Company, LMC.

The NPFL was suspended in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Danladi Isaac said that the two options deliberated by club owners were put to vote before the came up with their decision.

“It should be recalled that about three months ago, precisely March, football activities were suspended by the NFF because of the COVID-19 pandemic that ravaged almost all parts of the world. Some leagues around the world have resumed, some have protocols guiding league games, and some have cancelled their leagues. We just felt like a league body, it will not be ideal for us to suspend indefinitely looking at the CAF calendar and other circumstances. Club Owners in our own wisdom looked at two options. The first which is Option A is to end the league using the Points Per Game PPG because, by the time the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL was suspended, some club has not played an equal number of games for obvious reasons. There will be no promotion and no relegation. The second option which is Option B was to go for a six-team playoff still using the PPG to determine the teams that will compete at the Super 6. Then the top teams will represent Nigeria in the continent while the fourth team will come from the Aiteo Cup which the NFF has narrowed it down to Kano Pillars. This was put to vote democratically and as you can see 17 teams voted for option A. Two teams abstained and one voted for Option B.

Isaac concluded that the recommendation from club owners will be forwarded to the NFF via the LMC as soon as practicable in order to ensure it’s execution.
“Any moment from now, this vote and recommendation will be passed to the NFF via the LMC. I can assure you that they will get it as soon as practicable.” He concluded.

At the end of club owners’ voting process (7:59 pm), on Sunday, June 21, 2020, on the best options to end the NPFL 2019/2020 season by the 20 NPFL clubs.
17 Clubs namely.

Voted to end the season with the three top clubs going to represent Nigeria at CAF competitions via PPG table. No Relegation and no promotion.
