The Super Eagles of Nigeria will be without lead forward Alex Iwobi of Everton when they clash against Benin this evening in a crunch 2021 AFCON qualifiers in Cotonou.
The 28-year-old former Arsenal forward who was an expected starter in the game will watch from his hotel room after results of the routine pre-match Covid-19 test revealed the 38-capped speedy tested positive.
The native of Lagos with six goals for the Super Eagles will not be a part of Gernot Rohr’s team for this Saturday’s game and likely to miss next week’s group climax against at home to Lesotho.
Kelechi Promise Iheanacho is expected to be the pivot of the three-times African champions later tonight against a Benin side also missing two of their personnel Rodrique Kossi and Jacques Bessan who also tested positive for the Corona Virus.
Nigeria with eight points so far needs a victory in Benin to secure qualification for next year’s AFCON from a very tight group L wherein three nations including Benin and Sierra Leone go into the pan-ultimate round of fixtures with a chance of achieving qualification for Total AFCON Cameroon 2021 in January 2022.
