Former Cinyodev FC of Buea defender Niba McDonald is one of many footballers coping with life without football as a result of the imposed lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
The 25-year-old Budapest Honved defender is drawing strength from his love for his Slovakian girlfriend Viktória Regecova and daughter Niba Amelie.
“I start my day with first knowing how my daughter and girlfriend slept, calling them every morning,” he told kick442.com.
“I take my breakfast and then go off for the first training session. After training I rest a little then take lunch. After lunch I take a nap before the second training session in the afternoon.
“After training I have my dinner in the evening and do video calls with my special girls [Viktória and Amelie] and other loves ones and watch a movie before going to bed.
The native of Buea has revealed that he is hardly bored by what has become a new routine lifestyle for him.
“Everyday seems to be the same routine. I’m never bored. Always calling my girlfriend and daughter. They make me so complete. I’m very glad they are in Slovakia because their safety and health comes first for me. I miss them ofcourse but I’ll rather not risk their safety.”
He preferred to send his girlfriend and daughter to a small village in Slovakia to live with his girlfriend’s parents because it’s safer there than in the city of Budapest.
“Yesterday we started individual team training with 3 players on one field for two hours and then the other group comes in, it was a good feeling to be back with teammates,” MacDonald added.
He also explained how the club has handled the outbreak of the pandemic, to ensure that the players stayed fit and safe.
“The club is handling the crisis in the best possible way. Our regular training sessions where suspended from the 16th march until 19th of April, during which we had individual training plans on a daily basis to be carried out from home.
“So luckily yesterday[Monday] we started individual group trainings at our training ground. Like I said, with three players on a pitch for two hours in groups.
“Management has made sure that the night before each training session our temperatures are checked and we send an online Covid-19 test result to make sure we don’t have any symptoms.
“So it’s pretty good I think. During training sessions each player has a ball all to himself and that’s what he’ll use for the entire training session. After the training we go home and shower from our homes.”
The former Nitra defender also talked about this season with the prospect of playing the European club competitions next season.
“I haven’t played as much as I would have like to, but I’m satisfied with my performance whenever I am called upon.”
He has had some injury setbacks, but he is now ready and was competing for a regular starting position before the Coronavirus outbreak.
“I’m now solely focused on finishing the season strong with the last 8 games and strive to win the Hungarian cup as we are in the semi finals. So we have a big chance for a trophy this season and that could be our gateway for Europe next season. So the cup is paramount to us.”
Budapest Honved are currently ranked 6th on the 12 teams Hungarian league table, after 25 playing days, with 34 points, 19 points away from league leaders Ferencvaros.
