Cotonsport of Garoua failed in their quest for an historic 16th league one crown, as they were held to a zero all tie by UMS of Loum. Cotonsport was bookmaker’s favorites to clinch the 2019 league one title, given their squad strength and their goal scoring ability. It is true that UMS came into the game needing just the draw possibility as compared to the cotonites that needed nothing less than a win. And the opportunities actually presented themselves for Daouda Kamilou and his teammates to deliver the killer punch, which they all failed to do.
Coach Emmanuel Ndoumbe Bosso who joined the 15 times lead winners about three months ago from Yong Sports Academy, was hoping for his first piece of silverware in the country since 2013 when he last won the Cameroon cup with YOSA, but now bemoans the several squandered chances from his team. “I’m not happy because you cannot play a match like this one and fail to score even a single goal. We had so many opportunities to score, but now we have just our tears to cry, because had everything to make the difference, but we did not do it” said Ndoumbe Bosso .
The former panthere of Nde and Sable of Batie’s gaffer added that their opponents were not really a difficult side, as many think. He assumed “they were not so tough, because they came just to play a draw and succeed, but it was on us to make the difference, which we failed to do”. The Cotonites by failing to win the league one championship, also failed to pick direct a ticket for continental football competitions, but Ndoumbe Bosso believes that there is still a way out, through the Cameroon cup “we are going to continue working, because we are to playing the quarter final of the Cameroon cup on Wednesday, we have to quickly forget about what happened today, and then try to do something. It is another path which we can exploit to go continental”.
The chances of cotonsport playing continental football are now looking very slim, as their hopes of completing a domestic double have dashed away. Many football pundits have attributed cotonsports dwindling form in the last few years, to a poor recruitment policy, as the cotonites no longer scare teams as they did in the early 2000’s. With the likes of the clubs all-time top scorer, Daouda Kamilou fast approaching the end of their playing time, cotonsport needs strategize and bring in goal poachers, who can once more take the cotonites to heights the achieved in the early 2000’s.
