Substitute Paul Henri Tchikeu snatched a late winner after a shot from top scorer Priso Eyango, as Canon rode their luck to beat USD 1-0 to seal their place at the top of group B and throw the group wide open.
The Canon striker fired in off the underside of the bar from close range in the 86th, minutes after coming on as a replacement for Jean Louis Nnomo.
“It’s what want from team,” Minkreo Birwe said. “The toughest part of management is winning difficult games. We have won five in five games. I am a very happy man.”
It was another late League stinger at the hands of Canon team for Union Douala.
Before Tchikeu’s late strike, Onana Mvogo and mates had missed a series of serious chances for Canon.
Canon’s win was built on its energetic pressing, which often knocked Union Sportive of Douala off its usual slick passing game.
Union was guilty of loose passes and giving the ball away in its own territory, particularly in the first half, but still managed to carve out the best of the few chances at the Ngoa Ekelle with the highlight being the effort before half-time which caused a safe from captain Djaoyang Desire.
Birwe brought on Tchikeu for the largely ineffective Nnomo giving Canon fresh impetus in attack.
Canon spurned one great chance by firing over the bar before Tchikeu scored the winner.
The game finished on the 1-0 score in favour of Canon Yaounde who open a three points gap on second place YOSA who have 12 points with a game in hand.
