The date for the start of the 2022/2023 season in the Cameroon professional football championships has been decided and revealed as October 15, 2022.
According to our sources, the date for the kick-off of the first and second tier championships in the country was agreed after club presidents through their association, ACEC met with the management of the Cameroon Football Federation-FECAFOOT at the institution’s headquarters on Thursday August 4.
The various club heads including the association’s president, Pascal Abounde of PWD Bamenda met with prime interest to discuss the way forward for the new football season barely days after the successful 2021/2022 season was concluded.
According to information filtering from Friday’s gathering, the 2022/2023 season in the topflight football championship is also expected to be staged with a total of 22 clubs.
The new format will see teams being shared into two pools of 11 clubs each in the Elite One. The two bottom teams of each pools will get automatic relegation to the second division at the end of the season.
The latest format will see all the five Elite One clubs relegated at the end of the 2022/2023 season as it was in the just-ended season.
Meanwhile, the second tier championship will be held with 17 clubs, with the champions as well as the second placed teams expected to get promotion to the Elite One.
This will not be the first time the top flight championship in the country is held in the pool format.
In the past two seasons clubs have been divided into two pools and the Elite One winner and relegated sides partly decided through the play-offs system.
Last season, the League One was also organized with 25 clubs instead of its traditional 18 club format.
In terms of finances, the new executive of FECAFOOT has increased the subvention of Elite One clubs to 48 Millions per club and the prize money from 50 to 100 Millions FCFA.
