Players are generally at the center of attention in football, but the West Regional League match between AS Menoua and Volcan of Noun, July 27, featured a different type of hero.
In the 40th minute, AS Menoua’s midfielder Leonel Messi and Ibrahim Mouiche banged heads, which knocked Messi out leaving him falling to the ground, where he hit his head again.

“It could be have been really serious if not of the intervention of the referee,” an eyewitness who was watching the game told kick442.com.

Hero Mgangoum Michael immediately stopped play and sprinted to Messi while blowing his whistle to call medics to the scene.
“Messi’s tongue blocked his airway but he immediately freed it with a good first intervention, and helped medics take him to the ambulance. He also important to calm the players on the pitch.”
It took only six minutes for those who rushed for the first intervention to resuscitate the player.
We understand Messi regained fumm consciousness in the ambulance on the way to hospital. Although suffering a minor concussion and a tear in the head, an MRI scan confirmed that he did have a minor head injury.
According to senior officials in the Cameroon referee fraternity, League referees at all levels are required to pass a first-aid course to protect players in health emergencies. Cameroon League referees have also become more vigilant in protecting players on the pitch since the tragic accident of the Cameroon football legend Marc Viviene Foe in 2003 in France.
Foe, then 28, was on duty for the Indomitable Lions against Colombia in a FIFA Confederation Cup game, suffered a heart attack and collapsed on the field without contact and later passsed on.
FIFA has since taken various measures since that incident and Michael’s quick intervention displays the need for referees to take moree interest in First Aid.
These days the first five minutes are crucial to a player in an emergency situation and in the West region incident Michael Mgangoum deserved the acclamation of a hero for his great first intervention.
The game finished goalless and both players are in stable condition.
