MFM FC, Lagos have now equalled their winless streak in the NPFL having gone six games without a win and may break it next time out as they play away to Kano Pillars which will be a much more tougher game than their last two fixtures.
The Olukoya Boys have only won twice this season which was the match against Warri Wolves and the southwest derby against Sunshine Stars both at the Soccer Temple, Agege Lagos.
The last time they had such a long winless streak was in the 2019 season where they also went six games without a win.
The Lagos based side gained promotion to the NPFL on 31st August 2015 alongside Plateau United, Niger Tornadoes (relegated) and Ikorodu United also relegated.
Since Ikorodu United who was the second Lagos team that gained promotion alongside MFM FC that season got relegated, the church team have been the Pride of many Lagosians and many are not happy with the inability of the team to muster a win for the sixth game running.
What could be wrong with the team that once contested for the league title in 2017, finishing four points behind the eventual champions, Plateau United?
What could be wrong with the team that once played in the CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup?
What could be wrong with a team that once produced a player that scored a goal worthy of Puskas award (Sikiru Olatunbosun)?
What could be wrong with the team that became the toast of other teams in the nation?
What could be wrong with the team that once produced Stephen Odey, Onuwa Chukuka and the likes?
Are we not going the way we went 2016 where the team escaped relegation on the last day of the season?
It’s time these current set of players realize that the Lagos fans cannot afford to go through the trauma they went through in 2016 where most of the fans had their hearts in their mouths.
The Soccer Temple was jam-packed with almost everyone making calls to confirm the scores of the game between Plateau United and Heartland. I also was on my toes for the larger part of the match especially when FCIU were awarded a late penalty kick after Stanley Okorom had scored a screamer to put MFM FC 1-0 up but a brilliant save from Folarin Abayomi played a great role in the team’s survival that year.
Incase this current players and management team don’t know how difficult it is to gain promotion from the NNL when relegated, they should asked Ikorodu United and Shooting Stars. In case they are not thinking of sitting up now, maybe we remind them that the club serves as inspiration for many Nigerian Youths and not just the church alone.
Maybe it’s high time we remind them that this is not an Inter house sports competition or a church world cup but the Nigerian Professional Football League.
Let’s remind them that the league has just started and they are already 11 points away from the leader.
They are playing without fans now and it’s difficult getting results, how then will they handle the pressure of the fans at the Soccer Temple when they are finally let in.
Maybe Moses Adikwu, Tunde Azeez, Yinka Yusuf, Akanni Elijah and the rest should go ask Stephen Odey, Onuwa Chukuka, Ifeanyi Ifeanyi, Stanley Okorom and former MFM FC players what it was and how they felt wearing the MFM FC jersey in front of the fans at the Soccer Temple.
The fans cannot afford to sing that wonder song “Yahweh” in the NNL so they better buckle up now.
Folarin Abayomi should tell them how he felt standing one-on-one with FCIU player who played the spot kick he saved the year the team escaped relegation and how the fans reacted after the game.
Maybe they are not motivated enough, they should go watch clips of the 2017 season and get inspiration from them.
MFM FC is more than a church club, it is a club with strong fan base across Africa, as some other African countries now have MFM FC following the exploits of the Nigerian side.
Many may think the season is too early for this now but I have my reasons because I see the team heading similar way as they did in 2016 if no drastic changes take place and if the players and coaching staffs did not seat up.
MFM FC is more than a football club, MFM FC is an inspiration for the youths and to keep inspiring, the Club must keep winning.
