Senegalese forward Mbaye Niang has attracted interest from clubs in France and abroad, as the Rennes striker has continued to impress since joining them from Torino, initially on a loan deal before the move was made permanent in 2019.
In an interview granted to Le Figaro, Rennes’ coach Julien Stephan talked about all the speculations surrounding the future 25-year-old former AC Milan forward.
He clearly stated that he could not say with all certainty if the forward was going to continue his career with Rennes next season.
“We are not sure of anything. And it’s not a peculiarity of this reason. We have had offers and we have asked to know the club’s position and strategies on the subject,” Stephan said.
“I can only give an opinion from a sporting perspective, but I am also aware that there are economic considerations.
“Everything has to be considered. I will like to keep a solid core of the team and only ameliorate it with new arrivals.”
Highly desired by Olympique of Marseille, Niang’s contract with Rennes runs until June 2023.
This season, Mbaye Hamady Niang has scored 15 goals in 36 games across all competitions. His 10 league goals in 26 appearances helped Rennes to a third place ranking on the French Ligue 1 table after 28 days of play.
The French league was suspended in March to the Coronavirus outbreak and later ended in May, after a Prime Ministerial decision suspended all sporting activities in France till September.
Though he was born in Meulan-en-Yvelines in France and played for the French national teams at youth levels, he switched his international allegiance to Senegal in 2017 and has gone on to win 23 caps for the Teranga Lions since then.
