Officials of the Mauritius football association have announced have abandoned the current football season with immediate effect as a result the CoronaVirus pandemic.
A release signed by the Secretary general of the country’s football federation on Monday pronounced the decision.
“After considering the opinions of each member and mainly consultations with authorities during the past week, it has been, hence, decided that this current season 2019/2020 ends with immediate effect,resulting thus to the irretrievable abandonment of all championships at any level of competition.:A part of Paul Didier Gnanapragassa’s release read.
The Indian ocean islands with a total population of 1,2 million has registered 244 confirmed cases of Covid-19 with seven deaths.
This decision makes the Islandic nation the first on the African continent to announce abandonment of a season that has been marred by the deadly CoronaVirus pandemic.
They have followed the steps of Belgium who ended their domestic football championship last week and declared their champions.
The ten-clubs Mauritius topflight championship initially stopped on March 15th with just 13 games played from a possible 18.
Grand Reviere Sud Est Wanderers were leaders of the topflight championship with 30 points from 13 games. Cercle de Joachim and Savanne occupy the bottom places on the log. The football federation hasn’t mentioned what becomes of the leaders at the top or bottom.
CAF who are also on a recess because of the virus have not commented about the Mauritius move.
The move has the potential to set global precedents.
Burundi is the only African nation with active football on the continent.
