Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr has showered plenty of praises on his team after guiding Nigeria to the last 4 of the AFCON following a 2-1 win over South Africa on Wednesday night.
The German who won his 20th game since he took charge of the Eagles three years ago, however, thanked the South Africans for their role in making his job a success, positing that his team have become stronger on the continent since the 2-0 loss in Uyo two years ago.
“We had a plan and we knew South Africa would find it hard to replicate their performance against Egypt so we had a slight advantage. We are happy with the win and now we must recover in time for our next opponents”.
“I believe the loss in Uyo helped us refocus and we were able to beat Cameroon 4-0 during the World Cup qualifiers. We have only ever lost twice to African opposition since then and perhaps I have to thank Stuart Baxter for that,” Rohr said.
He further went on to thank the Egyptian fans for supporting his team whilst also praising his players for a good job done on the night.
“The support from the home fans was fantastic but my players also showed good attitude and we played very well in the first half which also gave them something to cheer about. I hope they continue to support us in the tournament,” Rohr concluded.
The Super Eagles are in the AFCON Semi final for the first time since 2013 when they finished champions of the competition. They patiently wait for the winner between Algeria and Ivory Coast to determine their semi final opponent.
