It was another action packed weekend for Cameroonian players plying their trade abroad, as many of them were involved in one way or the other for their clubs. As Usual, while some of them starred and helped their clubs to victory, it was a bitter pill to swallow for others, who ended on the losing end.
Joel Matip Helps Liverpool to succes
Cameroonian defender Job Joël André Matip, was instrumental for Liverpool FC, as they defeated Chelsea 11#10 on penalties, to clinch the league cup.
Matip thought he had opened scores in the 67th minutes of the game with a header assisted by Senegalese Forward Sadio Mane, unfortunately the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Technology indicated an offside position for Virgil Van Dijk. The goal denied by VAR would have been his eighth goal for Liverpool since debuting in 2016 after arriving from German side Schalke 04.
Aboubakar Vincent Takes Al Nassr closer to the top
Indomitable Lions captain Vincent Aboubakar, was in fine form over the weekend, as his brace helped Al Nassr FC secure all three points against Abha in match day 22 of the Saudi Arabia professional Football league. Aboubakar opened scores 37 minutes into the game, but Uroš Matić equalized at the 69 minute for Abha. Aboubakar produced the match deciding moment at the 97th minute, when he benefited from a well measured pass from Jaloliddin Masharipov, and slotted it pass goalkeeper Abdullah Hamdan Radha, to secure a 2#1 win for Al Nassr. The win took Al Nassr to just six points off league leaders Al Ittihad. It was Aboubakar’s ninth league goal in 18 appearances this season.
Mbella Etouga strikes again
Cameroonian forward Franck Mbella Etouga, continued his scintillating form, as his brace helped Asante Kotoko sail a two nil win over Dreams at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Mbella has now taken his goal tally to 13 goals in 14 games for the Porcupine warriors (14 games, 12 starts, 13 goals). Another Cameroonian, Mfegue Georges, was also involved in the game for Kotoko.
Oyongo Bitolo scores as Montpellier suffers defeat
Cameroonian left back Ambroise Oyongo Bitolo was in target for Montpellier on Friday, as they suffered a 2#4 defeat at home to Rennes, in a match day 26 fixture of the French ligue 1. The defeat means Montpellier are now on the 11th position in the rankings, with 37 points.
Eva Nga’s brace not enough to save Chippa
Cameroonian forward Bienvenu Eva Nga, was on target twice, as his club Chippa United suffered a 2#3 defeat to Gallants FC in Match-Day 20 of the South Africa Premier Soccer League. Nga scored in either half of the game, but Ndabayithethwa Phillip Ndlondlo’s brace and a late goal from Joseph Malongoane meant Chippa bowed to a defeat at home. The result means Nga Eva and Chippa United moves stays in the relegation positions to 15th in the standings, with 17 points to their credit.
Moumi Ngamaleu : The young Boy with 200 appearances
Cameroonian winger Nicolas Brice Moumie Ngamaleu marked his 200th appearance Swiss Super League giants Young Boys Bern, with a 3#1win over FC Sion, in Match day 23 action.
Moukoudi Returns as Saint Etienne suffers defeat
Saint Etienne welcomed their 23-year old Cameroonian defender Harold Dersty Moukoudi on Saturday in though he couldn’t help them prevent a 1-3 defeat away to PSG. Saturday’s appearance was the first in over two months. The defender lastly featured for the club in a 5-0 defeat to Stade Rennes in December 2021.
The defender started the game on the bench as his trainer preferred Frenchman Elaquim Mangala over him but he later had his chance. Moukoudi came on in the 56th minute with his side behind by 1-3 but sealed the backline to good effect.
Onana Returns as Ajax failed to Go Ahead
Indomitable Lion’s goalkeeper Andre Onana Onana was back between the sticks for his Dutch club Sunday, February 27, 2022 in what was his first start in the Eredivise in over a year. Sunday’s game against Go ahead Eagles marked his first appearance in the league in 13 months with his last dating back to January 31,2021 due to a ban for violation of doping laws. Unfortunately for Onana, Ajax was beaten two goals to one, by 12 placed Go Ahead Eagles. Despite the defeat, Ajax stays top of the eredivisie with 57 points, just two away from second placed PSV.
