A 53rd minute strike from FC Metz’s Cameroonian forward Didier Lamkel Ze was all the 1998 French Ligue 1 runners-up needed to edge SCO Angers of Stephane Bahoken and Enzo Ebosse by 1-0 in Match-Day 37 of the championship on Saturday.
The fixture in front of a packed crowd at the Stade Saint-Symphorien was more or less a final for the host who opted to trust Ze in the forward role a week after his massive contribution in their win against Olympique Lyonnais.
Both sides had chances but couldn’t take them during the opening 45 minutes.
Five minutes after the interval, Lamkel Ze fired the host ahead thanks to a great assist from Fali Candé.
The goal was a deserving reward for how much energy FC Metz had invested in the minutes gone.
Bahoken who was leading the lines for Angers on the night couldn’t create the same impact as in their last fixture, score.
Metz brought on former Cameroon international Jean-Armel Kana Biyik to tighten their defense in the final 23 minutes while Bahoken was replaced in attack by Casimir Ninga as they chased the equalizer which they ended up not getting.
Metz players celebrated after the final whistle as they secured a sixth win of the season to take their points tally to 31 like Saint Etienne but move above the latter going into their final game of the season against Champions PSG.
Didier Lamkel Ze who has recently been recalled to the Cameroon national team has scored three crucial goals in eight appearances since getting a clearance to switch to France in a mid season transfer less than two months ago.
So far, Bordeaux of Jean Emile Onana have been relegated while Saint Etienne of Harold Moukoudi and Yvan Neyou could be relegated in the final Match-Day if they don’t better Metz’s result in the final day of the season.
