Cameroon-descent referee Gaël Angoula has made his French Ligue 1 debut in this Saturday’s Match-Day 16 fixture pitting Olympique Marseille to Stade Brestois.
The 39-year old footballer cum match official replaced Antony Gautier and had an excellent display in the fixture which Brest came from behind to win by 2-1.
The rise to prominence of the former SC Bastia, Angers and USL Dunkerque defender has been amazing.
Only four years ago, Angoula was on the books of second tier
French club Nimes Olympique, being one of the key defenders in the 2016-2017
Inspired by former club colleague and team mate at Nimes, Nicolas Rainville, Angoula switched to officiating in 2017 and by the end of 2018, he was a top referee in the French Ligue 2 Championship.

The Referee spent just two years in the second tier championship before securing promotion to the top-flight Championship in the build-up to the current season.
The hardworking native of Yaounde was born in France. His latest feat has left tongues talking in his country of origin and his adopted country.
Yaounde-based upcoming referee Isifu Michael believes the feat achieved by Angoula could have far-reaching positive effects.
“It’s a big achievement. One that breaks many psychological barriers and racial prejudices. It feels happy for us to watch him perform. That’s possible because he has French nationality. What every referee wishes for are development and change of level,” Isifu experiencing a bright start to his career as a match official of the FECAFOOT center Region told kick442.com.
Whatever happens, Angoula is an example of the result of persistence and he will inspire others across Cameroon like in France.
