Newly promoted Southwest Regional League side Options Sports of Limbe displayed their quality and desire to challenge the contenders in the Southwest Regional league this football season.
They pulled a one all tie with bookmakers favourite, LIFCA on Sunday at the community field in Limbe.
Frederic Kwedi Elombo benefitted from a second minute cross to give Options the lead with a great header.
François Kamere could have made it 2 nil five minutes later but he couldn’t guide his close range shot below the cross bar.
Lane Lakem looked lively in the first 15 minutes as he won three corners in that time.
Joseph Yanki came close to opening his goal account for LIFCA but his 18th minute header on target from Lane Lakem’s corner was cleared out on the goal-line by captain Ayuk Derick of Options Sports.
A fine 22nd minutes set piece from Lane Lakem nearly opened the backline but goalkeeper Noel Brandy was foul.
Sharp looking Peter Paul shot off target in the 23rd minute after combining with Kwedi to open the LIFCA backline.
25 minutes into the match, Lane Lakem and Co were looking less threatening than expected as Options dominated the game.
Goalkeeper Noel Brandy was commanding on goal for Options.
A 36th minute lose ball fell on the feets of unmarked Joseph Yanki but his shot was put miles wide. The forward had another chance four minutes later, but he decided to square the ball to a teammate instead of testing the keeper but the Options backline found a way to clear their lines.
The score stayed at 1 nil for coach Walindjom’s Options side till half time.
Options Sports started the second segment on the front foot but Lane and his mates kept threatening through dangerous breaks.
A fine 64th minute set piece from Lane Lakem was dropped by goalkeeper Noel Brandy but his defense line led by captain Ayuk carefully put the ball away for Options.
A wonderful 75th minute combination for the boys of coach Daniel Walindjom nearly doubled their lead but Peter Paul’s efforts came off the side of the net.
An 83rd minute controversial penalty for LIFCA from Referee Moaffo Tsomo was converted by Lane Lakem.
The game stayed at 1-1 until full time.
Both sides created last minutes chances but couldn’t increase their goal tally on the day as the game ended without another goal.
LIFCA picked their first point of the season while Options Sports got a point and public on their side on their debut.
In the other games, ISOHSA beat 2014 and 2015 champions Best Stars Academy by two goals to nil while 2016 champions Victoria United came from behind to pull a one all draw against NQSA.
