Mainz O5 midfielder Pierre Kunde Malong has recovered from an ankle problem that kept him out for close to two months and returned to training.
The 25-year old Cameroonian midfield enforcer resumed training with the rest of the Mainz squad early this week but it is down to coach Bo Svensson to decide the appropriate moment to get him on for competitive action.
Speaking during the pre-match presser on Thursday the gaffer expressed cautious satisfaction about the player’s situation.
“He was injured for quite a while and has worked on getting back to 100% in the past weeks, which he managed to do. We have a few good options in the midfield, and he is most certainly one of them. In the past games, I have chosen other players, but we have seen in the past years how important and how strong of a player he can be. He now has to continue the hard work and keep presenting himself,” the gaffer stated.
Kunde has featured in 11 Bundesliga games this term but hasn’t been seen in match-day squad since December 19, 2020 owing to injury.
His recovery is timely for recovering Mainz who have as objective to beat the drop in a season that hasn’t been short of difficulties.
Kunde is certainly an important part of the quest for survival.
Mainz are away at Bayer Leverkusen for Match-day 20 of the Bundesliga.
