On Sunday, the Morons of Kenya achieved a great feat of qualifying for the FIBA Afrobasket for the first time in 28years and the brain that tinkered the team to greatness is Liz Mills.
The Australian who had coached several African teams as assistant coach was saddled with the responsibility of qualifying Kenya with hurdles like Senegal, Angola and Mozambique that needed to be surmounted.
Coach Mills’ team had just one win after the first round of the qualifiers and needed one more win to qualify, the team did it in grand style after beating of the power houses in African basketball, Angola 74-73 to ensure qualification.
The 115th team in the world garnered 368/450 points with two wins ahead of Mozambique who won one.
The trailblazer’s ssociation with African basketball began after she graduated with a degree in Sports Science and Sports Management in 2008.
What started as volunteer work in Zambia started a love affair with Africa that has now brought her to Kenya.
She returned to the country in 2011 and attended the opening tournament of the men’s national Super League and since then have gone to coach other teams.
