Officials of the Kenya football federation, FKF led by Nick Mwendwa have declared Gor Mahia as the country’s top- football league champions for the 2019-2020 season.
The decision was announced this Thursday April 30 per the regulations of the competition abandoned over a month ago due to the deadly CoronaVirus pandemic.
The latest crown is the 19th domestic success for the Nairobi-based side.
Gor Mahia were seven points better than second-placed Homeboyz after 23 games before the abandonment.
The decision comes barely 72 hours after the Confederation of African Football wrote to it’s member associations seeking clarity about the state of their domestic championships.
Reports from sources in Kenya say the decision to declare Gor Mahia as champions has been taken in accordance with the laws of the competition, as so far a minimum 68% of the matches for the season have been played.
The FKF equally decided that Nairobi Stars and Bidco United FC who are ranked second and third in the second tier competition will be promoted to the top-flight.
While there will be a playoff game pitting Vihiga United FC who are third in the second tier Championship against the 16th club in the championship.
It is the fourth consecutive season that the record champions have claimed the crown.
The FKF decision follows the pattern of Mauritius Island, Guinea and Angola as countries whose domestic championships have been abandoned as a result of the CoronaVirus-imposed break.
Gor Mahia will represent Kenya in next season’s CAF Champions League competition.
