South Africa’s Thobile Mbopkwa emerged as the winner of 2019 International Association of Ultra-Runners (IAU) African Championship, Remo 2019. The inaugural edition of the race which took place on Saturday, December 7, 2019, at Gateway International Stadium, Sagamu, Remo, Ogun state saw the South African carting away the first prize money for male category.
Thobile Mbopkwa won the 50km race with a time of 3 hours, 2 seconds ahead of Prosper Mutwira of Zimbabwe who finished second with a time of 3 : 05: 25 (3 hours, 5 minutes, 25 seconds) while Nigerian Iliya Pam finished third with a time of 3 : 12: 35 (3 hours, 12 minutes, 35 seconds).
The South Africans also emerged as the highest prize winners in the female category of the 50km race as Sanelisiwe Mbajwa (South Africa) emerged as winner with a time of 3 . 04. 45 (3 hours, 4 minutes, 45 seconds) ahead of Nigerian Elizabeth Nuhu Power who finished second with a time of 3 :47 : 39 (3 hours, 47 minutes, 39 seconds), while South African Scheffer Leilani finished third in 3 : 48 .01 (3 hours, 48 minutes, 1 second).
The first , second and third in the men’s category got $ 2000, $ 1500 and $ 1000 respectively.
For the 5km local race, Sajo Ishmael finished first ahead of Shaba Dare Ojo of Ondo State.
The winner of 5km local race went home with N500,000 Naira, second place (N300,000), and third place (N150,000).
