Ex-Cameroonian international and Liverpool defender Joel Matip limped off injured as his side were held to a 1-1 draw away from home at Fulham. The player who just returned from a spell at the side-line was taken off at half time after suffering from a back spasm, one of the problems Matip he has been facing in recent times.
Liverpool was rescued by Mohammed Salah who scored from a penalty at the 79th minute of play. This came after Bobby Reid has given his side Fulham the lead at the 25th minute of play.
The absence of Joel Matip only adds to the injury woes that is plaguing Liverpool. This has presently left manager Jurgen Klopp with no recognized centre back. Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez are off injured with no return in sight any time soon.
Liverpool has substituted some of their midfielders into the defence line. Captain Jordan Henderson was drafted in to play in defence during the game with fellow midfielder Fabinho.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was, however, optimistic about the player’s injury and he may return in time for Liverpool’s next encounter.
“Jeol Matip has a spasm in his back. We will see. In the moment, nothing else,” Jurgen Klopp said in his press conference.
“He got already treatment, we will get treatment and we will see. I think there is a chance for Wednesday. (It’s not that bad) in the moment, no.”
Liverpool will be hoping that Joel Matip is fit in time. The Reds will face Tottenham Hotspur this Wednesday in a top of the table clash. Spurs currently lead the table with 25 points after match day 12. This is the same number of point Liverpool has, but for a difference in the goal bracket.
The Reds have huge fixtures coming up on the horizon. The side is scheduled to face Manchester City and Manchester United in two meetings.
