Joel Matip is expected to be on the sidelines for a coupe of weeks after suffering an ankle ligament damage as his Liverpool side ended their five-game winless run to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1.
Goals from Roberto fermion, Trent Alexandre-Arnold and Sadio Mane saw the Reds moving back into the top four with all three points gotten at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Joel Matip was substituted at half-time and replaced by Nathaniel Phillips with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp confirming after the game that the Cameroonian has an ankle ligament damage.
Matip missed the 3-2 FA Cup defeat to Manchester United last Saturday due to injury but was judged fit to play the game against Spurs, a decision that now looks like a bad one.
“… I am not picky or whatever, but we need to find the right player. We have players still. Not a lot, honestly, in the defence line it is incredible what is happening there, it is incredible. But that is it,” Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said after the game.
There have been calls from ex-players of the Reds for the coach and management to get another center back during this January transfer window. Liverpool are currently without center backs Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Fabinho who has been deputizing at the defence is currently down with a muscle problem.
It is still uncertain how long Matip is expected to be on the sidelines. The injury-prone defender just got back from another injury (back injury) that saw him miss a couple of games for his side.
It should be noted that Liverpool’s win moved them to the fourth position on the standings, four points behind leaders Manchester City, who has a game in hand.
