President Jeremias Simão of the Technical Council for Sports in the Angola football federation has told kick442.com that the body will meet on Monday to decide on the future of the 2019-2020 Girabola season.
President Jeremias Simão was reacting to social media claims that the current Girobola season has been abandoned a month after it was forced on break by the CoronaVirus pandemic.
“No, I can categorically tell you that so far, no decision has been taken. We met with the clubs today [Thursday] to get their proposals on the situation,we have to study these proposals between now and Monday. We will meet again on Monday, it is only after Monday’s meeting that clubs and other stakeholders will know our decisions on the championship” President Jeremias Simão stated.
Four weeks after the championship was suspended following the outbreak of the CoronaVirus pandemic in Angola, there’s increasing speculation that the country’s football federation, FAF will subscribe to the popular option of abandonment of the season.
24 games into the 30 games season, Petro Athletico of Luanda are leaders with 54 points while Premiero Aogusto trail them by three points and occupy the second spot.
The FAF is expected to decide on how on the conditions of abandonment if that option is subscribed as president Jeremias Simão acknowledges it maybe a daunting task to restart.
“Well as it stands, it is difficult to see the actors quickly back on the pitch because, this entails more than the time we have. Therefore we can have a situation on Monday were we have to subscribe the least damaging option. The likelihood for abandonment with six games left exists but for now we have not made any decision” president Jeremias told kick442.com.
The board is expected to decide on whether to continue the current season or not. If they choose not to continue, how to settle the title battle and relegation battles will be their priority, not leaving out the decision on which clubs get the CAF inter-club competitions tickets.
In the same vain, the second tier championship will need a decision about its future.
Girabola leaders and record champions Petro Athletico of Luanda and Primeiro D’Agosto will likely share the continental competitions tickets if it ends as it stands.
CAF awaits a report on the way forward for the Angolan championship like others on the continent on or before May 5, 2000.
So far Mauritius Island,Guinea,Kenya have abandoned their championships because of the health threats of the CoronaVirus pandemic.
