Former Indomitable Lions of Cameroon defender Rigobert Song was in attendance on Saturday in Akonolinga [outskirts of Yaoundé] as former TKC full back was given the last honor before burial.
Song who was the full-back’s gaffer with the Olympic selection of Cameroon was one of the high profile guests at the event with hundred of sympathizers.
The 23-year-old full back collapsed and died in amateur football game at the Mfou Stadium in the outskirts of Yaoundé-Cameroon on Tuesday June, 9,2020.
Considered one of the promising players in the country before his demise, the TKC defender was called up to Cameroon’s Olympic team by coach Rigobert Song in one of the team’s training camps last year.
Unfortunately, the player’s football journey has come to an abrupt end.
Song was captured on-camera trying to encourage the player’s family during the event.
Till his burial no further details were released about the tragic passing away of the gentleman.
An unnamed footballer who watched the game on the day of his death told this News Agency on the sad Tuesday of the event that, the defender collapsed and died without being hit.
He further also revealed that attempts to resuscitate Ovidi proved futile.
His demise is one too many for the Cameroon football family.
The recent case has amplified the call for greater medical attention for Athletes [footballers] in the country.
The defender who was on the books of the legendary Yaoundé club in the last two seasons before his death reportedly suffered a similar malaise in the course of the just-ended Cameroon Elite One season, but was resuscitated.
Unfortunately, the recent situation took away an interesting prospect.
Ovidi adds to the long list of Cameroonian footballers that have died in active service in the last decade.
The player’s mortal remains has been laid to rest over the weekend in Akonolinga.
