Olympic Lions of Cameroon head coach Rigobert Song Bahanag has taken to social media to extend his condolences to the family of fallen potential Cameroon international James Piddy Ovidi.
The 23-year-old full back collapsed and died in amateur football game at the Mfou Stadium in the outskirts of Yaoundé-Cameroon on Tuesday June, 9,2020.
Considered one of the promising players in the country before his demise, the TKC defender was called up to Cameroon’s Olympic team by coach Rigobert Song in one of the team’s training camps last year. Unfortunately, the player’s football has come to an abrupt end and Song is not indifferent about the loss of a great talent.
“The big family of the Under-23 Lions of Cameroon learned with dismay, and sadness a few days ago the passing away of James Piddy Ovidi. This news deeply saddens us, considering the imprint that he left us,” Song wrote on Twitter.
An unnamed footballer who watched the game told this News Agency on that sad Tuesday that, the defender collapsed and died without being hit. He further explained that attempts to resuscitate Ovidi proved futile.
His demise is one too many for the Cameroon football family. It has amplified the call for greater medical attention for Athletes [footballers] in the country.
The defender who was on the books of the legendary Yaoundé club in the last two seasons before his death reportedly suffered a similar malaise in the course of the just-ended Cameroon Elite One season but was resuscitated.
Unfortunately, the recent situation took away an interesting prospect. Song still remembers Ovidi’s potentials;
“His desire, professionalism and hard work marked is what I remember during our time in camp. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and his club,” Cameroon’s record defender Song, now coach concluded.
Ovidi adds to the long list of Cameroonian footballers that have died in active service in the last decade.
The player’s mortal remains are still in the mortuary in Yaoundé while his family continues preparations for a proper burial of a great talent gone too soon.
