The issue of salary payment has bedeviled African football for long and its effects to the development and growth of the game is unspeakable.
The Federation of International Professional Footballers Associations (FIFPRO), Africa Division honorary president, Geremi Njtap lends his voice on the cankerworm as he calls on club presidents to do the needful by paying players their salaries.
The former sturdy Indomitable Lion of Cameroon defender spoke at a recently held webinar on “How COVID-19 is impacting African Football Players and Clubs.
The former Chelsea player says the issue has been on before there was a crisis and urges club owners to give the players what is due them.
”Even before that crisis, the problem was there. The problem of nonpayment of salary. Our role is to improve that and when we improve that footballers and players will produce good performances.”
He further states the benefits of paying players explaining that the clubs get to gain at the long run.
”My message to all the president of clubs is to tell them that it is important to pay salaries of the players. It is for the benefit of the club and benefit of everyone because as long as they produce performances people will come back to the stadium, the club will sign contracts with TV. So it is important that president or those who organise competitions to focus on that.”
The versatile player is a champions league winner with Real Madrid, domestic title winner with Chelsea and winner of nation cup titles with Cameroon.
FIFAPro Africa was created in 2007.
