The President of Federation International of Football Association (FIFA), Gianni Infantino is thinking of the possibility of having future FIFA Women’s World Cup every two (2) years as against it’s current arrangement of once in four (4) years.
Infantino stated this on the eve of the last match of the FIFA calendar in 2019 — the final of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Infantino provided his views on the future of world football competitions including the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“With France 2019, we had more than 1 billion viewers around the world and some incredible figures in countries where normally women’s football is not anywhere close to the men’s game, such as Italy, Brazil or England. This tremendous success triggered a few proposals , on which we are already working. Besides,
(French Football Federation) president (Noël) Le Graët came up with a proposal that went a bit unnoticed: of playing the FIFA Women’s World Cup every two (2) years instead of four (4). This would generate benefits and momentum that fit exactly with what the women’s game needs right now. It is something we should put up for discussion.”
The United States of America (USA) defeated Netherlands 2-0 in the final of 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France winning their fourth (4th) title in the process and became the second nation, after Germany, to have successfully retained the title.
The Women’s World Cup have been held every four (4) years since it’s inaugural edition in 1991.
