Liverpool FC have taken up the option to extend the contract of Cameroon defender Job Joël André Matip by a further year.
The 28 year old Cameroon defender was key player in Jurgen Klopp’s UEFA Champions League winning team last season.
The contract extension comes as a reward the centre-back they brought in from Shalke 04 in 2016 on a four year deal.
His current contract was due expire at the end of this season.
Matip has made 79 league appearances for the Reds and has been able to impose himself as a key player for the team under their very exigent German coach.
Liverpool are also considering the possibility of offering a fresh deal to the player that will keep him with the Merseyside club on a longer basis with better remuneration.
The native of Bochum has played for Cameroon’s senior national team on 27 occasions, scoring one goal but opted to stay away from international duty since 2017, citing lack of professionalism in the way the team was managed.
