The 27th International Handball Federation (IHF) World Men’s Championship started on Wednesday in Egypt with an opening match between the Pharaohs of Egypt and the La Rojas of Chile.
Egypt came out triumphant with a six-goal difference win over the Chileans.
The African Champions defeated the South American team 35 to 29 points in the first game of the tournament.
2020 African Championship Most Valuable Player (MVP) Yehia Elderaa was on fire for Egypt. The centre back contributed 6/6 goals including the first goal of the tournament and six assists to earn the Hummel Player of the Match award.
The first group G tie started on an even situation with Chile responding to all that Egypt brought to them.
However, the host began to take control of the game as they lead some minutes later by 8 points to 3. The Chileans getting 2 minutes suspensions didn’t help.
The first half ended 18-11 with the African side edging it in terms of physicality and composure.
Javier Frelijj of Chile got red carded at the start of the second half and that only made the situation worse for the South Americans.
Egypt were in cruise control leading by 27 points to Chile’s 18 points, but the La Rojas with a fine run at some point in the game reduced the deficit to five points.
The host nonetheless stood their ground to win the tie.
The year’s edition of the tournament is an extended version with 32 teams instead of the previous 24 teams.
