In a nail-biting match, hosts Egypt fought back from five goals behind early in the second half for a tense race to the buzzer, splitting points with Slovenia at the end.
The result of 25:25 was enough for the hosts to claim Group IV’s first quarter-final place.
Egypt had struggled at the beginning of the game, leaving at the mercy of the Slovenes who practically had the game in their hands in the first phase.
By the end of the first half, it was Slovenia 12, Egypt 8.
The African Champions however were not ready to go down as all they needed to progress to the last eight was a draw.
Consequently, the hosts improved their game, balancing the score that was previously at 15:10 to 15:15 in the second half.
That gave Egypt the impetus to push and take the lead till almost the end as the Slovenian team that needed a win became nervy.
As the game was winding down, Egypt were two points ahead two minutes before the end of hostilities, but Slovenia’s Borut Mackovsek and Miha Zarabec were on hand to restore parity. It was not enough however for Slovenia to quarter finals.
