24-year-old Cameroonian international Andre Onana has been included in the IFFHS CAF team of the year for 2020. The International Federation of Football History and Statistics, IFFHS recently made the 11-man team with just the Cameroonian international amongst.
The 1.90 m goalkeeper has played 18 matches thus far for Ajax in all competitions. Andre Onana had a brilliant 2019 with his club Ajax which culminated in being selected in the CAF Team of the Year, alongside Joel Matip during the CAF awards for 2019.
The prolific Cameroonian international last year was looked by a host of clubs in Europe after he wanted to leave Ajax. Chelsea and Spurs in England and a return to his boyhood club FC Barcelona were the three front options for Onana, though he decided to stay with Ajax.
Onana cannot necessarily be termed as a “sweeper-keeper” but he is not afraid to step out of his box to help out his defenders when need be. He is also a good passer of the ball having made 19.93 passes per 90 with an accuracy of 88.95 per cent. Most often, Onana prefers to play the ball short but when he does go long the ball often finds his intended target.
Last year, he played 24 matches in the Eredivisie and 10 matches in the UEFA Champions League. In all competitions, he played in 39 matches for Ajax.
Andre Onana is expected to be in Coach Antonio Conceicao’s plans as the country looks to defend their AFCON crown they won in 2017. Andre Onana missed that edition of the competition and will hope to do justice in 2022. The AFCON that was to be held in 2021 was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic to 2022.
