After the 1982 win, the Black Stars of Ghana have continued to struggle to win their fifth African Cup of Nations title.
The best they have come in recent times was in 2015 when they were runners up of the tournament.
At the last African Cup of Nations in Egypt, the team succumbed to Tunisia on penalties in the last sixteen.
At the world stage, the story is similar as the team’s best appearance was in 2010 when they got to the quarter finals.
The last time the team played at the world was in 2014 were they crashed out in the group stage.
Obviously, Ghanaian football is struggling both on the continent and the world stage and some factors are bedeviling one of Africa’s giants.
In a recent outing on Ghanaian based television , Angel TV, Ghanaian winger, Mubarak Wakaso stated that the problem of the Black Stars of Ghana may not be unconnected to the politics of the land.
He player said “I will speak the truth today, do you know our problem about the game? Maybe we know but we don’t want to say it but I think politics ruins the Blacks Stars at times. When NDC is in power, NPP doesn’t want us to win and vice versa,”
While some regard his statement as ”flimsy”, ”myopic”, ”unprofessional”, some say it is the truth.
The former minister sports, Nii Lante Vanderpuije totally supports Wakaso’s assertion.
“I agree with Wakaso 100%. Partisan politics has ruined the Black Stars. I experienced it as a sports minister. Some people in NPP influenced some players against me during my time as minister and I got to know”
”Some of my party people too advised me against entertaining some Black Stars players in my office. We have to understand that Sports should be devoid of politics. It is a big challenge” Nii Lante Vanderpuije stated.
If truly politics is a clog in the wheel of progress in Ghanaian football, then a lot need to change to salvage the situation.
