The vice-chairman of Central Regional Football Association, Dr. Francis Eyiah- Bediako has recounted how UCC Youngsters came to been and his involvement in football even though he is an academia.
Dr. Eyiah-Bediako, a lecturer of the University of Cape Coast Statistics department has been appointed by the Ghana Football Association to chair the newly formed match review panel.
In one on one interaction with John Kwesi Arthur of Darling FM and kick44.com, Dr. Bediako said he has been in football administration since his days as a student of the University of Cape Coast.
“I formed the team Asuokaw Youngsters now UCC Youngsters at Asuokwa, a community in the Eastern Region of Ghana as a third division club when I was a student at the University of Cape Coast.”
“In 2006, the team qualified to play in the second division league in Eastern Region.
A year later, we qualified to play in the second division middle league for qualification into the first division. However, things did not work out as expected.”
“Later in the same year, (2007), the team was moved from Asuokwa to Cape Coast ( UCC Campus) upon advice from the former central regional FA Chairman late Mr. M N.S Doe with the reasons that most of the key players were from Cape Coast. Again, the then-head coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum, now the head coach of WAFA was a student of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation ( HYPER) department of UCC. And finally, I was also a lecturer here and I have to travel to Asuokaw every weekend for matches.”
“I later changed the name of the club from Asuokaw Youngsters to Mighty Youngsters.”
“The team (Mighty Youngsters) played in the super middle league for division two clubs in the central region on three consecutive times.”
They also participated in the reintroduced national FA Cup competition twice with enviable performances.”
“In 2013, the team was taken over by the University because most of the players were students of the University and also to ease the financial burdens on me but I was still made chairman of the club. The name of the club was finally changed to UCC Youngsters.”
“Among the players who played for UCC Youngsters were; the current captain of Medeama FC, Joseph Tetteh Zuta, the captain of Ebusua Dwarfs Dennis Nkrumah Korsah, former defender of Dwarfs Ebenezer Ackon now in the USA, William Opoku Mensah now with Asante Kotoko, Maestro of Asempa FM and many others.” He said.
On his new appointment, Dr. Eyiah-Bediako said their role is defined and with the support from all and sundry, they can deliver to help shape football in the country.
“The match review panel’s duty is defined. Our responsibility is to review matches with issues and give our recommendations for further actions.
Therefore, with help from all especially the media, we shall deliver.
Though we may be having challenges especially at the division one where critical issues persist, we will do our best to overcome them.” He added.
