One of the major highlights of Cameroonian football was recorded on 15th of May 1985 in Yaoundé.
It is a Sunday and the weather condition is quite permitting for football.
It is a penultimate meeting between the Champions of Asia, Saudi Arabia, and the champions of Africa, Cameroon. Both sides are meeting for the second time in 3 years after a 0-0 draw in an international friendly on October 12, 1982 in Saudi Arabia.
But this time around, it is the first leg final of the Afro-Asian cup.
The Amadou Ahidjo stadium is jam packed with over 60, 000 spectators in attendance. Cameroon line up Boe(gk), Toube, Kounde, Ebwea, Vougai, Mbou Emile, Kana Biyick, Roger Milla, Adaman Oumarou, Louis Paul Mfede and Omam Biyick.
They are facing a strong Saudi side masterminded by the spirited Abdel Shakour.
The referee is Eritrea’s Gabryesus Tesfaye who is just freshly back from handling important matches at the 1984 AFCON, a tournament that Cameroon won first the first. It was in Cote d’Ivoire. [take note Mr Tesfaye died last year aged 78] .
Uncles Zacks diary reveals that this was one of the first matches the young man Omam Biyick was discovered as a deadly finisher.
On seven minutes, Roger Milla hits the woodwork with a superbly taken volley while the on rushing Omam Biyick unleashes a piercing headed shot from Milla’s rebound to put Cameroon in front on eight minutes.
On 33 minutes Mbouh Mbouh Emile beats Abdel Shakour with a thrilling body swerve, then connects the ball to Milla who cooly buries it into the net. But the Saudis reduce tally on 44 minutes following a deflection from defender Kunde Emmanuel. Cameroon take the 2-1 lead into the dressing room at half time.
On 83 minutes, François Omam Biyick beats goalkeeper El Doei on a one on one situation, but his effort hits the side post. Vougai then collects the rebound and whips into the 18 yard. A well positioned Milla orchestrates a bicycle kick that goes kissing the net for 3-1 Cameroon.[Milla’s second of the night] .
But, while the commentator, Zacharie Nkwo, is still analysing the action that led to Milla’s goal, Mbouh Mbouh Emile seizes the ball from Samada a.k.a El Bishi and quickly drones it to the scampering Roger Milla who again beats El Mansour, but is illicitly brought down in the 18 year. Penalty for Cameroon!!!
Set piece specialist Kunde Emmanuel takes charge and steers it into the back of the net. Cameroon 4-1 Saudi Arabia.
It is this score that the Indomitable lions would take to Saudi Arabia one month later [October 4, 1985] . Inspired by Abdel Gawad, the Saudis would defeat the Cameroonians 2-1. Cameroon’s lone goal is scored on 57 minutes by Eman.
In spite of this result, Cameroon became the first African Nation to lift the Afro-Asian trophy. Since then, only Algeria, Nigeria and South Africa have won it.
The tournament was discontinued following a CAF decision because some Afro Asian countries supported Germany rather than South Africa to host the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
