58-year old Portuguese trainer Horácio José Paredes Mota Gonçalves has been appointed head coach of the mambas of Mozambique with immediate effect.
The Mozambique football federation made the announcement on Monday after reaching an agreement with the former Costa do Sol trainer.
Goncalves spent last season on the dugout at local side Costa Do Sol, winning a domestic double of the Mozambican championship and the cup.
He replaces compatriot Luis Felipe who was fired earlier this month for failing to pilot the team to the Total 2021 AFCON tournament in Cameroon.
Though it is the first national team job for coach Goncalves, the retired striker has amassed huge experience in his 25 year career as a trainer working for not less than 14 clubs.
The gaffer is expected to quickly get to work and assemble a team that will challenge AFCON-bound sides Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Malawi in the second round of the 2022 FIFA World cup qualifiers to begin in June 2021.
