Argentinian Hector Raul Cuper, 65, has been appointed as the new Head Coach of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Cuper who has a wealth of experience on the African Continent takes over from Christian Nsengi-Biembe who failed to qualify the Leopards to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
Hector Cuper famously took charge of the Pharaohs of Egypt from 2015 to 2018 and took the country to the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He left after they were the first country eliminated from the tournament and was later appointed Head Coach of Uzbekistan.
It has been earlier reported that DR Congo was looking at getting former Cameroon Coach Hugo Broos. Bross, however, was appointed as the South Africa Coach.
But Congolese Association Football President Constant Omari told AFP: “We have set our sights on the Argentinian Cuper as the new coach of the Leopards of the Democratic Republic of Congo.”
Cuper who has had previous national team coaching jobs with Georgia, and Uzbekistan, has been tasked with qualifying DR Congo for the next world cup. The group phase begins this September and concludes next March.
DR Congo is in Group J alongside Benin, Madagascar and Tanzania for the qualifying rounds of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
