The Chairman of Parliamentary Select Committee of Sports and Culture in Ghana, Hon. Alex Kofi Agyekum has been backlashed by football loving fans for suggesting pay cuts for local players.
Many football clubs in Europe are contemplating on implementing pay cuts for their players during this global pandemic where almost all football activities are halted.
Same cannot be said about most African teams because of the financial gains of the players against the economic situations on the continent.
Many local players are paid meager salaries which are normally termed as “hand to mouth”. It is against this background that most football administrators and players are unhappy about the suggestion by the law maker.
Many are suggesting that, the committee headed by the Hon MP for Mpohor has not even made any gesture in the fight against the pandemic and could have started by making contribution as a committee.
Earlier on, the law maker had claimed that the Black Stars players have not made enough contributions to the nation’s fight against the virus, something that the players were unhappy about because of his ignorance about their individual contributions.
It is on record that Kwadwo Asamoah, Dede Ayew, Asamoah Gyan, Joseph Attaamah Larweh and others have made myriad of contributions that probably the member of parliament is unaware.
Local players are currently barred from engaging in group trainings but are individually taking their trainings seriously since the domestic championship halted midway into the month of March following the outbreak of the CoronaVirus pandemic in Africa.
