The Head Coach of the Ghana’s senior national team ( the Black Stars of Ghana) Charles Kwabla Akonnor has advised Thomas Partey to stay at Athletico Madrid despite growing reports of a switch to Arsenal.
The 27-year-old Ghanaian defensive midfielder, Partey has been linked to Arsenal since Mikel Arteta took over as the manager of the Club.
This Pan-African Sports News Agency understands the player once went as far as agreeing personal terms with the London Club but it is left with Arsenal to trigger the £45 million release clause in his contract and Athletico Madrid want asking for a full payment.
Reacting on the potential on Accra based media outlet Joy FM, the Head Coach of the Black Stars of Ghana C. K Akonnor said Partey should stay in Spain to give him the opportunity to play in the Champions League as his position is guaranteed.
“I wouldn’t want [Thomas Partey] to move to Arsenal because, with Atleti, he’ll always play Champions League Football. His position is guaranteed and he will always play. With Arsenal, I’m not too sure. Arsenal fans will kill me!” he said
Partey’s Champions League journey ended on Thursday as they were surprisingly knocked out at the quarter-final stage by the German side, RB Leipzig in a 2-1 defeat in Portugal.
