A member of the Executive Council of Ghana’s Football Association-GFA, Frederick Acheampong says Ghana senior men’s national football team will overpower Nigeria and qualify for the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
According to the Ghanaian media personality and football administrator, football pundits writing the Black Stars off for possible qualification to the planetary event due to the team’s recent performances in the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, may be carrying out hasty and poor judgments.
“If you judge this match on Ghana’s performance at AFCON 2021, it’s easy to say that Nigeria will beat Ghana. But the Nigerians who were in the room next to me are expecting a great game against Ghana.” Acheampong partly told the media shortly after Saturday’s draws for the final round of the qualifiers.
“We know them and they know us. And I am confident that Ghana will prepare well to eliminate Nigeria and qualify for the World Cup. Ghana has already gone through such a situation. During the AFCON in 2006 in Egypt, we were eliminated in the group stages and everyone said that we were in decline.
But the same year, we became the pride of Africa during the World Cup in Germany.” The Ghanaian FA board member noted.
“Nigeria is having a wonderful campaign in this AFCON but qualifying for the World Cup is another thing.” Acheampong noted.
The draws for the final phase of African Zonal Qualifiers to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar were held in Cameroon’s economic capital, Douala on Saturday January 22, pairing old time rivals Ghana and Nigeria together for the games to be held in March this year.
Four time African champions and 2010 FIFA World Cup quarterfinalists, Ghana and Nigeria share an age-old football rivalry that has spanned over 70 years.
The two nations have met over 41 times in international games with Nigeria harvesting 21 wins in the process.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria will be looking forward to overpower the Black Stars and book an African record equaling 7th appearance in the final phase of the FIFA World Cup competition. A record currently held by the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars of Ghana who got eliminated from the 33rd edition of the AFCON currently held in Cameroon at the group stages, are chasing their fourth participation in the planetary football festival and their first appearance since 2014 in Brazil.
