The outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic has provoked the cancellation of several domestic football leagues in Africa.

Gambia Football Federation, GFF has become the latest football institution to join the trend of abandoning the season following the path of countries like Cameroon, Sudan, Uganda and a host of others.

In a statement published on their website, the GFF has declared the 2019-2020 season null and void, meaning the season ends and the results obtained so far will have no consequences.

Therefore there is no champion of Gambia for the just ended season, no club will be relegated from the league one and two championships and no club will be promoted to the top-flight.

Real De Banjul

Before the suspension of the league, Real De Banjul FC was top while Gambia Armed Forces FC was seconded. They will both represent the country in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup respectively.

The same 14 clubs that participated in the 2019-2020 season will be around whenever the league resumes most likely in the post CoronaVirus era.

The above decisions come after multiple efforts by the GFF including financial support to clubs amongst others.

The federation headed by President Lamin Kaba Bajo also extended it’s gratitude to all clubs for collaboration during the tough times.

Gambia currently has 24 confirmed cases of the coronavirus pandemic with 1 death and 13 recovered cases.
