Ghana Football Association has ended the monopoly enjoyed by the Referees Association of Ghana (RAG) following the appointment of the GFA Referee’s Manager.
Ghana football association has appointed retired FIFA referee Alex Kotey as the referees manager to take over the general recruitment of referees which was exclusive responsibility of RAG.
In an interview with Graphic, Mr. Kurt E. S. Okraku, the president of the FA detailed the rationale behind instituting the position and its intended purpose.
“The truth is there is nowhere in the world where refereeing is controlled by the referee’s association of that country. In fact, it doesn’t exist,” the GFA president told Graphic.
He however added that RAG will still perform its duties as the welfare body of the referees.
“The Referees Association of Ghana has their roles to play; they are the welfare body of the referees, and they will continue to perform that role. “As it is, if we believe that some person or persons (members) can act in different capacities at the FA level, why not,” he added.
The newly appointed Referees Manager will soon launch the ‘GameChanger’s policy aimed at recruiting and training kids to be engaged in officiating.
