Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr said that his team can win the next African Cup of Nations but will first have to qualify for the tournament before dreaming of achieving such a dream.
“I think we have the chance to win the next AFCON but we have to qualify first which we have started well. We have to stay humble and respect other teams. We are progressing. We are now third in Africa, we were 13th when I took over. We had a video chat with the coaching staff recently where I introduced the new Assistant Coach, Joseph Yobo to the coaching staff and we are working towards a good display and performance.” He told a television station in Nigeria.
The coach recently extended his contract to be in charge of Super Eagles but has been criticized for not inviting players from the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL. Rohr said that everybody has a chance of playing for the team irrespective of where they are playing.
“Everybody has a chance to play for Super Eagles. We don’t look at where they play, we look at their performance. Unfortunately, the NPFL is currently not in session. I have Ikechukwu Ezenwa with us. We have the CHAN team, unfortunately, they couldn’t qualify for CHAN. Me and my Assistants will continue to watch our league games. We can’t continue to invite our league players who will then move to Europe and you then expect us to invite more local players. We are also working on inviting players of Nigerian descents abroad.” He concluded.
Gernot Rohr led Super Eagles to a third-place finish at last AFCON in Egypt where the team lost to eventual champions, Algeria in the semi-final via a late winner from Riyad Mahrez’s free-kick. He also qualified the country for the last World Cup in Russia but failed to lead the team out of their group after losing to beaten finalist Croatia and Argentina.
